The band director’s friends, colleagues and former students celebrate his VCU career — and retirement — with a concert in his honor
After nearly 40 years as VCU’s director of bands, Terry Austin — who also had a four-year run as the music department chair — retired in June, played off by a band of former students in a farewell concert.
That night, and in an interview with the magazine the following week, he looked back on his career, what he’s learned and the importance of being moved by art.
