A peek inside the 16-story Children’s Tower at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU

The completion of the Children’s Tower at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU ends a decadelong project to build a city block-size care center for kids. The inpatient tower, erected next to and atop the hospital’s 2016-completed outpatient pavilion, has 72 private rooms, a rooftop helipad and some new care tech — like IV ultrasound machines that help nurses quickly insert IVs into the veins of sick children.

It also includes dozens of design touches for kids and families: colorful murals of animals and the James River, a three-story indoor garden and atrium, playrooms and teen lounges, an on-site Ronald McDonald House and seven levels of garage parking.
